Case Study: Curating Mountain Fine Art for Two Landmark Whistler Properties

December 2024 | Trade Feature & Curation Spotlight

When designing luxury alpine spaces, fine art is far more than a decorative final layer—it sets the tone, anchors spatial proportions, and connects interior living spaces directly to the raw mountain environment outside.

This past December, I had the privilege of collaborating with a premier Whistler interior design partner: Pacific Light Creative on a multi-property curation project. The assignment spanned two contrasting architectural environments: a grand custom mountain chalet in the prestigious enclave of Kadenwood, and a refined ski-in/ski-out executive penthouse at the base of Blackcomb Mountain.

Here is a look behind the scenes at how we worked together to select, frame, and deliver five statement pieces tailored specifically to each home's visual identity.

Project 01: Kadenwood Residence

Spatial Focus: Architectural Entrance & Master Sanctuary

Perched high above Whistler Creekside, Kadenwood is recognized as one of North America’s most exclusive mountain neighborhoods that features it’s own private gondola. The grand architecture and towering volume demand artwork with presence, balance, and quiet gravity.

  • The Entrance Foyer — Tantalus 4 First impressions matter. For the residence's main foyer, our design partner selected Tantalus 4 as a statement piece. A Epson premium lustre fine art print, mounted on alupanel and classically framed in black wood, the piece introduces the grandeur of the Coast Range immediately upon entry, creating a striking focal point against the home's natural timber and stone finishes.

  • The Bedroom Suite — 48x48 Square Format Statement For the bedroom retreat, spatial proportions called for a balanced 48x48 square format. The piece brings atmospheric light and serene depth into the room, creating a restful, contemplative backdrop suited for a private sanctuary.

Project 02: Blackcomb Ski-In/Ski-Out Penthouse

Spatial Focus: Luxury Rental Refresh & High-Impact Gallery Spaces

Located at the base of Blackcomb Mountain, this multi-million-dollar, ski-in/ski-out penthouse underwent a full design refresh aimed at elevating the experience for high-net-worth seasonal guests and luxury rental clientele.

To achieve a timeless, sophisticated aesthetic capable of withstanding high guest turnover while delivering maximum visual impact, our design partner curated a combination of bold monochrome studies and full-color transitional works:

  • Living & Dining Ensembles — Mountain Solitude (Monochrome) & Soul Lines (Monochrome) We produced custom black-and-white renditions of Mountain Solitude and Soul Lines. Stripping away color placed full emphasis on the dramatic light, shadow, ridge lines, and physical texture of the mountain terrain, delivering a sharp, modern gallery feel to the main social spaces.

  • Transitional Gallery Hallway — Sharkfin on the Neve (Full Color) For the main hallway passage, the vision required a dynamic transitionary piece to connect the residence's living areas. We specified Sharkfin on the Névé in its vibrant, original full-color palette. The rich alpine hues and sweeping snowpack light guide the eye through the corridor, bringing vibrant energy into the heart of the penthouse.

The Trade Experience: From Curation to White-Glove Installation

Collaborating with design professionals requires seamless execution at every step:

  1. Tailored Curation & Visual Mockups: Working alongside our trade partners, we evaluate room dimensions, wall lighting conditions, and material palettes to recommend specific substrates, edition sizes, and framing profiles.
  2. Archival Substrate Engineering: All five works were mounted on rigid, dimensionally stable Alupanel composite backings and encased in solid wood framing—ensuring pieces that stand the test of time.
  3. Direct White-Glove Delivery: In keeping with our trade service standard across the Sea to Sky corridor, we personally handled site transit and white-glove placement for both properties—delivering framed, ready-to-hang art straight to the project team on site, fully certified and inspected.
